Switched Ethernet networks are spreading to industrial environments more are more. The current trend is using them at all levels of a factory, replacing this way field-buses and other industrial networks. Switched Ethernet lacks the drawback of the non-deterministic collision resolution of coax cabling. However there are still some sources of indeterminism, mostly due to contention problems in message queues at switches and network interfaces. One of the most significant linguistic and technical challenges applied to subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing persons (SDH) is the linguistic description of sound encapsulated within the space of subtitles. The aim of this article is to present the results of a questionnaire-based study carried out as part of the author’s Master’s Degree dissertation about Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing (SDH). In particular, the need to gather specific information regarding audience design will be highlighted in the paper, since this research field has long been neglected in Italy. The questions were aimed at shedding light on the needs, cultural environment and world-view of Italian SDH users, by eliciting personal data as well as subtitlerelated information.
